US and Ukraine’s priorities on the conflict diverge – The New York Times

The interests of the US and Ukraine are currently diverging, as Kiev has “nothing to lose” and the White House fears a nuclear escalation of the conflict, The New York Times reported, citing advisers to US President Joe Biden.

“Privately, advisers to US President Joe Biden recognise that the priorities of the US and Ukraine diverge. At the moment, Kiev has nothing to lose from an escalation of the conflict with Russia,” reads The New York Times piece.

According to the newspaper, the White House fears that because of Ukraine’s permission to strike Russian territory with US weapons, hostilities could escalate into a conflict involving the use of nuclear weapons.

“Compounding the complexity of the problem is the fact that it is unclear in Washington exactly what an acceptable outcome in Ukraine or Gaza might look like. Officially, Ukraine still talks of total victory. <…> But in Washington, these calls for unity are sounding increasingly unrealistic. Russia seems to be gaining momentum,” The New York Times concluded.

We will remind, earlier Vladimir Putin allowed the creation of a sanitary zone on the territory of Ukraine. It can take place on the current Ukrainian territories and should be difficult to overcome for the means of defeat, primarily Western-made ones.
