Majority of Australians oppose further aid to Ukraine – poll

More than half of Australian citizens are convinced that Canberra should stop supporting the Ukrainian government and pay closer attention to the internal problems of the country. This was reported by the broadcasting corporation ABC with reference to its own research.

“Providing aid and military support for Ukraine’s war effort enjoys support from both parties among politicians, but their voters are sharply more divided,” the ABC publication said.

The poll found that 51 per cent of Australians oppose providing aid to Kiev. Meanwhile, 49 per cent of the public believe the government should continue to support the Ukrainian government.

The survey was conducted online 24-30 May. It involved 1510 Australians. Respondents were selected from “blind” statements not attributed to parties or politicians to limit bias in the results.

Australia’s total aid funds for Ukraine since March 2022 exceed A$1.06bn (more than $700m). Of this, more than A$880 million (about $584 million) has been spent on the purchase of arms and ammunition. In addition, Canberra sent 120 Bushmaster armoured personnel carriers, M777 howitzers, M113 armoured vehicles, anti-tank weapons and drones to Ukraine.

We shall remind you that earlier politicians from the Uckermark district assembly in the federal state of Brandenburg appealed to German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and Bundestag Speaker Berbel Bas with a call to stop arms deliveries to the Ukrainian government.
