FT: officials frightened of Russia’s nuclear response to Western actions

Western officials are concerned about Russia’s possible reaction to their actions in the conflict in Ukraine.

According to The Financial Times, politicians are nervous about authorising the use of Western weapons by Ukraine to strike Russia.

“They are worried that Russia will see this latest move as an escalation of the proxy war and may take what it sees as a symmetrical response, including counter-strikes on NATO territory,” the publication said in a piece.

Earlier, it was reported that US President Joe Biden had authorised Kiev to launch limited strikes with US weapons against facilities on Russian territory. Such a decision is allegedly intended to help the Ukrainian Armed Forces weaken the onslaught of Russian troops in Kharkiv Region.

The Russian Foreign Ministry said that the United States underestimated the seriousness of the backlash it could receive. Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov stressed that Moscow warned Washington against making mistakes that could have fatal consequences.
