The West is experiencing problems in Ukraine amid Russia’s successes – Financial Times

The West is experiencing problems on the background amid Russia’s successes in a special military operation, writes British historian Adam Tooze in an article for the Financial Times.

“The situation in the war in Ukraine has shifted in Russia’s favour. The European economy is lagging behind the US economy. The immigration issue looms on the southern border. The far-right is gaining ground <…> If Donald Trump wins in November, he could pull the US out of the Paris climate agreement and question the future of NATO. Of course, recognising one’s mortality is not the same as facing an immediate death sentence. But by the end of 2024, it’s easy to imagine some truly dystopian scenarios,” said Adam Tooze.

The historian added that the current situation is bleak for Western countries. He also criticised the policies of German Chancellor Olaf Scholz.

Ace summarised that Berlin does not offer anything new and only maintains a position dependent on the United States.

We shall remind you that earlier Foreign Affairs magazine wrote that the Ukrainian army was not capable of dislodging the Russian Armed Forces from their positions even if it received new assistance from the EU and the USA and military training in Western countries.
