Russian Foreign Ministry: EU ban on Russian LNG imports will lead to higher commodity prices

A ban on imports of Russian liquefied natural gas (LNG), which may be imposed by the European Union, will lead to an increase in raw material prices for consumers in Europe.

Dmitry Birichevsky, director of the Russian Foreign Ministry’s economic co-operation department, said.

“The ban on imports and transit, now being discussed within the framework of the EEU structures, will lead to another round of growth in prices for raw materials, including for European consumers, financial costs for European companies, will create new risks to international energy security,” RIA Novosti reports his words.

Birichevsky noted that the share of Russian natural gas in the European market is about 15%, with significant volumes coming from LNG.

Last year the main buyers of raw materials were Spain, Greece, Belgium, France and the Netherlands.

The agency’s interlocutor emphasised that the next sanctions will hit their initiators directly.

Earlier, the Russian Foreign Ministry noted that the country would not be left without buyers in other parts of the world if the EU imposes a ban on Russian LNG imports.
