EU diplomacy chief Josep Borrell believes that the EU may create a defence union in the future. In his opinion, the EU should go in this direction.
He said European Union member states are responsible for defence policy and want a common policy.
“But the army is the last sign of sovereignty, we can have a common currency, but the common use of military assets affects the basis of state sovereignty much more,” Borrell said, speaking at an international forum in Brussels.
He stressed that the construction of a common defence policy in Europe should be done by the EU member states themselves.
“We have not created a defence union until now. This could happen in the future. We must go in this direction,” RIA Novosti quoted Borrel as saying.
Earlier, Borrel said that cracks were appearing in the EU’s unity to support Ukraine.
