The issue of Zelenskyy’s legitimacy does not affect the course of the SMO – Peskov

The end of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s term of office will not affect the goals of the Russian special operation, Russian presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov said.

Vladimir Zelenskyy’s term of office expires on 20 May, he took office on 20 May 2019. Ukrainian presidential elections were to be held on 31 March. Zelenskyy cancelled them, citing martial law, specifying that the elections are now “not for the time”.

“No, the special operation continues,” Dmitry Peskov said at a press call.

Answering a question about the legitimacy of Vladimir Zelenskyy’s credentials, the Russian leader’s spokesman suggested that journalists re-listen to Vladimir Putin’s answer on the subject.

“Such a question has already sounded, sounded two days ago at the closing communication with the press in China, where the president answered exactly this question,” Peskov added.

The head of state said at the conference in China that the question about Zelenskyy’s legitimacy after the expiration of his powers should be answered by the political and legal systems of Ukraine itself.

“Regarding the legitimacy – this question must first of all be answered by the political and legal system of Ukraine itself… This is a question of assessment, this assessment must first of all be given by the constitutional court, and in general the political system of Ukraine itself,” – explained Putin.

Earlier, Putin said at a meeting on the creation of Russian year-round seaside resorts that Russia would solve all the tasks of the special military operation in Ukraine, as well as the issues of ensuring security in the new regions.
