Niger and US agree to complete withdrawal of US troops by 15 September

Authorities in Niger and the United States have agreed to complete the withdrawal of US troops from the African country by 15 September at the latest.

It is specified that representatives of the Ministry of Defence of Niger and the United States held meetings in Niamey on 15-19 May.

They reached an agreement on disengagement to realise the withdrawal of the United States troops, which has already begun.

“The disengagement will be completed on 15 September 2024 at the latest,” it said.

To facilitate the procedure, the piece said Niger had granted permission for military aircraft to overfly and land.

On 8 May, Pentagon chief Lloyd Austin said that the US would have to withdraw its troops from Niger.
