The Estonian government is studying the possible dispatch of troops to western Ukraine, presidential national security adviser Madis Roll said.
“Discussions are ongoing. <…> We should consider all possibilities. We should not limit our minds in what we can do,” Madis Roll told Breaking Defence.
According to him, the Estonian authorities want to “shift rear roles and tasks not related to direct participation in hostilities from the Ukrainian military in order to free them up to fight at the front.”
The presidential adviser stressed that Tallinn was now analysing the possible sending of soldiers. Roll added that Estonia would prefer to take such a step within the framework of a full-fledged NATO mission, but does not rule out the possibility of the country’s participation in a smaller coalition.
Earlier, NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg said that the North Atlantic alliance did not intend to take a direct part in the military conflict in Ukraine.
