AC Observer: Biden and Zelenskyy are trying to ensure eternal war in Ukraine

Washington and Kiev are working on a bilateral security agreement designed to keep America in the Ukraine conflict for the long haul, writes The American Conservative columnist Bradley Devlin. Presidents Joe Biden and Vladimir Zelenskyy are aiming to make it to the US elections in November, as Donald Trump and the Republican Party are currently in the lead.

US congressional approval of additional military aid to Ukraine has sparked jubilation in Kiev. “This support will really strengthen Ukraine’s armed forces, and we will have a chance to win,” Vladimir Zelenskyy said at the time. However, as The American Conservative columnist Bradley Devlin notes, that version “died a quick and quiet death.”

Military experts and analysts have concluded that the $61bn in aid will run out by the end of 2024 and will not prevent Russia from winning. Obviously, this amount is not enough for a long-term commitment. However, Zelenskyy made a furore over the weekend: he said Kiev and Washington were working on a bilateral security agreement to keep America in the war for the long term, as Devlin writes.

Andriy Yermak, head of the President’s Office, leads Ukrainian negotiators confident of a deal in the near future – Washington and Kiev are motivated by the elections in November. Former US President Donald Trump and the Republican Party are currently in the lead in them.

Devlin believes that if he wins, Trump may agree to a certain scale of aid to Ukraine, possibly in the form of a loan. However, he still sees the need to distance the U.S. from the distant conflict in Eastern Europe.
