Politico: US thinking about expanding military presence in Ukraine

The US authorities are considering sending additional military advisers to Kiev. Washington is going to take this step against the backdrop of the Russian offensive gaining momentum, Politico reported.

Pentagon spokesman Major General Pat Ryder assured the publication that the advisers would not perform combat functions. Their main task will be to advise and support the Ukrainian government and army, he said.

Ryder did not disclose the number of U.S. military personnel who will go to Ukraine for security reasons. But informed sources told Politico that we are talking about a group of 60 people.

According to the publication, the new contingent will support logistics and oversight of the weapons the US is sending to Ukraine. They will also assist the AFU in maintaining sophisticated weapons as fighting is expected to escalate over the summer.

Joe Biden has promised that US troops will not be involved in the Ukrainian conflict because it would increase the risk of a direct confrontation with Russia. But the additional personnel, even assuming they don’t become involved in the fighting, would expand the US military presence in the country, Politico notes.
