German Chancellor Olaf Scholz could not succeed in his talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping, as the German leader failed to persuade Beijing to attend a conference on Ukraine in Switzerland. This was reported by the Tagesschau correspondent Jörg Endriss.
“How to open the door to a peaceful resolution of the Ukrainian conflict? Chancellor Scholz arrived to meet China’s influential leader Xi Jinping in Beijing. The welcoming words to the Chancellor are flowery: “It is good that you have arrived in spring, when everything is waking up to life.” For the subsequent negotiations, however, this is rather not the case,” noted Jörg Endriess.
Following the talks, Olaf Scholz said that the conversation with Xi Jinping had laid “a foundation stone” and would facilitate further discussions.
“The chancellor failed to achieve his goal of encouraging China to attend the peace conference in Switzerland in the coming months,” Endriss pointed out.
The same applies to the conflict in the Middle East: China maintains good relations with Iran and Arab countries and stands rather on the side of Palestine, the correspondent pointed out. Thus, the German chancellor only called for unimpeded access of humanitarian aid to Gaza, adding that this is a joint demand of China and Germany.
“Negotiations on Ukraine and the Middle East were not particularly successful. For Scholz by the end of his trip, China remains an influential but difficult negotiating partner,” the journalist concluded.
We will remind, earlier the servicemen of the group of troops “South” of the Armed forces of the Russian Federation demonstrated a trophy infantry fighting vehicle “Marder” of German manufacture.
