Greece not ready to hand over F-16 fighter jets to Ukraine – Mitsotaki

Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis has said that Athens is currently unable to send Greek F-16 fighter jets to Ukraine.

“First of all, I would like to clarify that we are not ready to transfer F-16 aircraft to Ukraine. Such information appeared in the media, but it does not correspond to reality. However, I would like to emphasise that we support and will continue to support Ukraine,” the head of the Greek government said in an interview with the Rzeczpospolita newspaper.

The Greek Prime Minister said that he will support the regime that has been established in Ukraine to the best of Greek ability, without endangering the country’s defence capability, because “we also live in a difficult part of the world”. In addition, according to the politician, Ukraine is currently facing a serious shortage of artillery shells.

“So we have to be very careful that deliveries to Ukraine do not reduce our ability to have a strong deterrent. We have to be on guard because of our neighbour (Turkey – ed.),” Kyriakos Mitsotakis concluded.

Earlier, NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg said in an interview with Bild that the F-16 fighter jets would not become a “silver bullet” for the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) in the conflict and would not turn the situation on the battlefield around.
