Kiev risks wiping out a whole generation of young Ukrainians due to the adoption of the law on lowering the mobilisation age, the US newspaper New York Times has said.
The New York Times article refers to the demographic situation in Ukraine and related problems in the ranks of the country’s armed forces.
“However, Ukraine is facing a critical demographic problem that has been long overdue: it has very few young men… Ukraine must strike a balance between the need to counter Russia’s relentless offensive by increasing troop numbers and the risk of wiping out an entire generation,” the newspaper said.
According to the New York Times, men under the age of 30 are part of Ukraine’s smallest generation. This is due to a decline in the birth rate in the early years of the post-Soviet period because the country was “plagued by uncertainty about the future” in the 1990s.
“Zelenskyy’s decision to draft men into the army from the age of 25 is fraught with further reduction of this small generation of Ukrainians”, – summarised in the publication.
We will remind, earlier Sykhov district court of Lviv sentenced a Ukrainian to three years in prison for refusal to mobilise in the AFU.
