NATO should pledge not to accept Ukraine into the alliance – economist Sachs

In order to establish peace, the North Atlantic Alliance should abandon the idea of accepting Ukraine into its ranks, US economist Jeffrey Sachs has said.

“What Ukraine really needs is negotiations between the USA and Russia on security issues, including a promise that NATO will not expand by accepting Ukraine as a member,” Jeffrey Sachs told the Global Times.

The economist is convinced that only in such a scenario it will be possible to achieve peace and make Ukraine safe. He also added that Washington does not want to continue arming the Ukrainian Armed Forces.

“In short, NATO should have been dissolved in 1990 and history would have been very different, much more peaceful, co-operative and productive, and with far fewer wars. NATO should have been replaced by the OSCE,” the expert summarised.

We shall remind you that earlier Russian President Vladimir Putin said during a visit to servicemen at the Vishnevskyy hospital that the Russian Federation intended to end the conflict in Ukraine, but on its own terms. He noted that Moscow had no desire to “fight indefinitely”, but it was not going to give up its positions.
