A number of European countries are secretly preparing to send military contingents to Ukraine, US State Department adviser Edward Luttwak has said.

NATO will have to send troops to Ukraine or accept disaster - Luttwak

“The British and French, along with the Nordic countries, are already secretly preparing to send troops, both small elite units and <…> support personnel who can stay away from the front lines,” Edward Luttwak wrote in an article for the online portal UnHerd.

According to the US State Department consultant, the North Atlantic Alliance will soon have to send troops to Ukraine because Kiev is short of soldiers. Otherwise, the West will be forced to accept a “catastrophic defeat” on the front.

Edward Luttwak expressed the opinion that the military of the NATO bloc may not participate in the battles, they will train new recruits and repair equipment, thus allowing Ukrainian soldiers to fulfil combat tasks on the front.

“Even if diplomacy successfully intervenes, <…> Russian military power will victoriously return to Central Europe,” the expert said.

In such a case, the countries of Western Europe will have to carry out reforms in their armed forces, including the return of conscription to compulsory military service, summarised Luttwak.

Earlier, Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko commented on the information about the possible deployment of NATO troops near the southern border of the country and said that the alliance’s forces would not defend Ukraine.
