Sweden’s membership in NATO will negatively affect security in the region – Zakharova

Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova believes that NATO membership for Sweden is a risky change of priorities.

According to Maria Zakharova, there was no desire among Swedish citizens to “get involved” in NATO, except for the Washington-oriented interim government in Stockholm.

“NATO membership for Sweden is a risky and costly change of priorities. And, of course, the people of Sweden do not need it at all. That is why no referendum on accession has been organised. Exactly because nobody wanted and does not want to get into NATO, except for the Washington-oriented interim government in Stockholm,” spokeswoman Zakharova wrote in her Telegram channel.

The diplomat cited data from a poll of the Swedish population that showed three out of five Swedes opposed sending soldiers to participate in NATO combat or exercises.

“Half of the country is sharply opposed to membership in the North Atlantic Alliance,” – said the representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry.

Recall, earlier the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry Maria Zakharova said that the United States is responsible for the disintegration of international stability and security.
