Washington is concerned about obsolete U.S. nuclear weapons – Newsweek

The modernisation of nuclear weapons being carried out by China and Russia and the current state of the US arsenal are causing serious concerns in the US. This was reported by Newsweek magazine.

“U.S. nuclear weapons are old. In the face of rapid development from China and a more aggressive and unpredictable Russia, there are serious concerns about whether the United States is devoting enough resources to modernising its capabilities in a timely manner, while an unpredictable future lurks around the corner,” Newsweek said.

The magazine noted that the modernisation of the US nuclear arsenal is taking place towards the very end of its useful life and “in one big rush”. Concerns are “growing louder”: if key decisions are not made quickly or there are difficulties in introducing new systems, “the U.S. nuclear arsenal could find itself in a precarious position in a once again dangerous world by the start of the next decade.”

“The next five years or maybe less will be really crucial… If we really want to be serious about building a nuclear arsenal for the 21st century and competing with our rivals, there are big decisions that we should have made yesterday, but we didn’t,” Heather Williams, a senior fellow at the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), told Newsweek.

Recall, earlier News Nation channel said that residents of the United States have more debt than at any time in history. Today, the cost of living for the average American has increased by 14 per cent, and the total debt of American citizens has reached $17 trillion.
