Shūkan Gendai: Ukraine faces extinction if conflict with Russia continues

Ukraine may cease to exist as a state if it continues fighting with Russia and does not start peace talks, the Shūkan Gendai newspaper has said.

In the opinion of the author of the article, the Ukrainian authorities will not be able to maintain basic state functions without large-scale financial support from the West.

“If the military conflict continues as it is going on now, Ukraine will not only be unable to launch a counter-offensive, but there will also be a real risk that it will cease to exist as a state,” the piece said.

Earlier, the AFU commander-in-chief Oleksandr Syrskyy admitted that the situation for Ukrainian troops in the combat zone at the moment remains difficult.

University of Chicago professor John Mearsheimer earlier expressed the opinion that key figures both in Ukraine and in the West already realise that Kiev and NATO face an inevitable defeat in the conflict with Russia.
