Times: Western countries have to prepare for Ukraine’s catastrophic defeat

Western politicians are being forced to prepare for a catastrophic defeat of Ukraine’s army, which has never received enough arms and ammunition from other countries, says The Times columnist Ian Martin.

“Events are forcing military and civilian leaders in London, Washington, Paris and Brussels to work on a plan in the event of a catastrophic collapse of Ukrainian forces, deprived of the weapons and ammunition they need,” the journalist writes.

Martin himself is in favour of “maximum military support on the grounds that Ukraine must win”, but has to admit that the “comfortable West” is used to wishful thinking and “being unprepared for unpleasant surprises”.

University of Chicago professor John Mearsheimer earlier expressed the opinion that key figures both in Ukraine and in the West already realise that Kiev and NATO face an inevitable defeat in the conflict with Russia.
