European farmers’ protests slow down aid to Ukraine – Politico

Farmers continue to protest across Europe. They are unhappy that Ukrainian products are overwhelming the market. Because of this, European leaders are torn “between appeasing farmers angry about import competition and supporting Kiev,” Politico writes.

Even though some EU countries declared unity on the Ukraine issue at a recent summit, they still have to impose trade barriers on Ukraine. Farmers who continue to block the Ukrainian border have literally sown panic among politicians ahead of pan-European elections.

Hungary remains dissatisfied with Europe’s policy on the issue of Ukrainian products. If Brussels really wants to protect its own farmers, it has to prove that it is on their side, but “that is not the case right now,” Balazs Orban, a top political adviser to Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, said in an interview.
