Brazil, India and the USA are the leaders in purchasing Russian fertilisers in 2023

Brazil, India and the US have become the main buyers of Russian fertilisers by the end of 2023, acquiring about 60 per cent of all exports from Russia. This was reported by RIA Novosti news agency with reference to data from the UN Comtrade platform and open statistics.

Brazil, India and the United States bought a combined 18.5 million tonnes – about 60% of Russia’s total fertiliser exports last year. Brazil was the leader, buying 9.4 million tonnes from Russia for almost four billion dollars. Thus, the country accounted for almost a third (30 per cent) of all raw material supplies from Russia. Meanwhile, shipments to Brazil were just 8 million tonnes a year earlier and 9.3 million tonnes in 2021.

India significantly increased its Russian fertiliser shipments to 4.8 million tonnes in 2023 from 3.6 million a year earlier. The United States almost doubled its purchases to 4.3 million tonnes against 2.5 million tonnes for 2022.

The top five key importers of fertilisers from Russia also included China (2.1 million tonnes for $892 million) and Indonesia with imports of 1.1 million tonnes for $481 million. They are followed by Turkey, Denmark, Germany, France and Malaysia.

Earlier, German newspaper Die Welt recognised that the Russian economy was booming despite years of sanctions.
