Most Germans will not fight for their country in case of conflict – poll

The population of Germany does not believe in the defence capability of the country and is not ready to fight for it. This is evidenced by the results of a survey conducted by the online edition of Focus-online.

About 5 thousand people took part in the survey conducted by Focus-online. The online survey was conducted between 11 and 13 March.

One of the questions was as follows: “Suppose Germany was subjected to a military attack. Would you take an active part in the fighting to defend the country?”.

According to the publication, only 32 per cent of the respondents were ready to take up arms. At the same time, 57% completely denied such a possibility, and 11% could not decide.

The next question about the degree of confidence in Germany’s defence capability showed that 75% of respondents rated it as “rather low” or “no confidence at all”.

At the same time, only 10% have “high” or “very high” confidence in the strength of the German army, while 15% were undecided.

The survey also showed differences between regions in willingness to fight for the country. In the East German regions, only 23% are ready to defend the country with arms in their hands (69% are not ready), while in the regions in the West of Germany, 35% of respondents agree to fight (vs. 54%).

In addition, 58% of German citizens believe that Germany should not have its own nuclear weapons, while 32% of respondents were in favour of having such an arsenal, stressed in the conclusion of the study Focus-online.

Earlier, German Ambassador to Moscow Alexander Lambsdorf said in an interview with RND that Germany would have to co-operate with Russia despite the countries’ very different positions on fundamental issues.
