The construction of the largest NATO base in Europe has begun in Romania

In Romania began construction of the largest NATO base in Europe, designed for 10 thousand military. This was reported by Euronews TV channel.

According to Euronews, the facility is being built on an area of almost three thousand hectares in the district of Constanta (Romanian port on the Black Sea), on the basis of the already existing NATO airbase “Mihail Cogalniceanu”. The TV channel said the €2.5 billion project includes runways, weapons platforms, hangars for military aircraft, as well as schools, kindergartens, shops and a hospital.

Romanian expert Dorin Popescu believes that the construction of the largest NATO base in Europe is linked to the Ukrainian conflict. In his opinion, the military confrontation in Ukraine will last for several more years.

“The base will become NATO’s most important permanent military structure in close proximity to the conflict in southern Ukraine. Let’s not imagine that this conflict will end in 2025 or 2026, this is a long-term conflict,” Dorin Popescu said in a commentary to the TV channel.

Earlier, US Senator Mike Lee in an article for The American Conservative magazine expressed the view that the United States was obliged to leave the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation if any country of the military-political bloc decided to deploy troops to Ukraine.
