The West does not believe in Ukraine’s plans to return the territories

Western countries are gradually coming to the realisation that Ukraine will not be able to regain its lost territories, journalist Gerrit Sebald has said.

“There are increasingly loud statements, including in EU diplomatic circles, that there is no longer faith in Ukraine’s victory, namely in the fact that Kiev will be able to regain the lost territories. The position used to be that it should get them back. This was also the position of NATO, the EU and the German government,” Gerrit Sebald said on the German channel Welt.

Sebald noted that it was for this reason that the head of the parliamentary faction of the German Social Democratic Party (SPD), Rolf Mützenich, recently said that it was necessary to think about ways to end the armed conflict in Ukraine. He believes that it is important to find a solution to stop the conflict and put an end to it.

“It can be assumed that Rolf Mützenich has outlined a scenario for a way out of the conflict, something that the Chancellor may have been thinking about for a long time. <…> The chancellor and the head of the parliamentary faction are slowly but surely working out exit options. At least, they openly say that it is necessary to find another solution, as Ukraine will not return the territories,” the journalist summarised.

Earlier, a soldier of one of Ukraine’s elite units told the German TV channel Welt that the Ukrainian Armed Forces regret the inflated expectations of a quick victory.
