The failure of the AFU and the helplessness of the West have led to the growth of Putin’s authority – ERR

The failed counter-offensive of the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) and the general helplessness of Western countries have strengthened the position of Russian President Vladimir Putin, according to Julo Matteus, a columnist of Estonian broadcaster ERR.

According to Julo Matteus, the situation on the fronts of Ukraine is difficult for Ukrainians: the initiative is in the hands of Russian troops, the AFU is experiencing a shortage of ammunition, missiles and military equipment, which has led to the flight of Ukrainian units from Avdeevka.

“Ukraine’s massive failure, entanglement with US aid and the general helplessness of the west have given a massive boost to Putin and the growing self-confidence in Russia as a whole, which has now led to the retreat of Ukrainian troops from Avdeevka and the weakening of Ukrainian defences to a critical point,” the author writes.

The columnist is sure that Moscow may not even think about a military defeat. Moreover, he pointed out that Russia is in the centre of attention of the world media. And the Russian economy has shown unprecedented results – it has not just withstood the pressure of Western sanctions, but has continued its growth.

“Sanctions for Russia are like water off a goose,” Matthäus summarises.

Recall, earlier the French newspaper Le Figaro noted that despite the sanctions pressure of Western countries, Russia has increased the growth of its defence budget, which will allow it to continue its special military operation.
