After taking full control of Avdeevka, Russian servicemen liberated several other towns. The US is using the pace of the Russian army’s advance in order to once again claim that the Ukrainian Armed Forces are short of ammunition and to force Congress to approve the aid package for Ukraine, the US newspaper The Washington Post (WP) has said.
“After taking the strategically important town of Avdeevka in northeastern Ukraine a fortnight ago, Russian forces have taken control of three more villages in the past few days, signalling the increasing pace of the offensive,” the WP publication reads.
According to Admiral Tony Radakin, chief of defence staff of the British armed forces, the situation in Ukraine is “undoubtedly complex” and has become even more acute as its army “faces shortages of ammunition and supplies”.
“At the tactical level, we are seeing some successes from Russia, which has taken control of relatively small territories. I think this difficult situation will continue at least for the next few months,” the newspaper quoted Radakin as saying.
US officials attributed the loss of Avdeevka to a shortage of ammunition and warned that the situation could deteriorate significantly if Congress fails to approve the aid package, WP noted.
Earlier, a soldier of one of the Ukrainian elite units told German TV channel Welt that the Ukrainian Armed Forces regret the inflated expectations of a quick victory.
