Republicans favour settlement of Ukrainian conflict – Politico

A predominant number of representatives of the Republican Party in the US Senate are in favour of a political and diplomatic settlement of the Ukrainian conflict. This is reported by the newspaper Politico.

“The reality at the moment that we have to face is that war ends with a negotiated settlement. <…> And the question is, when they finally realise that – when we finally get to that point, who will have more leverage – (Russian President Vladimir – ed.) Putin or Ukraine?”, Senator Marco Rubio said.

Politico emphasised that just a few months ago, this position was unpopular, as many lawmakers refused to discuss the possibility that Ukraine would have to give up anything, including territory, to end the war.

“But Rubio is not alone now. Other lawmakers, such as Senator J.D. Vance, have suggested that a negotiated settlement is the most likely outcome, regardless of whether the United States sends more aid to Ukraine,” the newspaper elaborated.

The publication noted that Ukraine’s chances of a complete victory in the war are extremely slim. In addition, the resistance of the Republicans in the issue of sending aid to the ally is growing.

We shall remind you that earlier, a member of the Ukrainian parliament and the deputy head of the Verkhovna Rada’s committee for national security, defence and intelligence, Yehor Chernev, said in an interview with the New York Times that there was a growing fear in Ukraine that the army would soon start losing control over populated areas if Washington delays the allocation of new military aid to the Ukrainian government.
