Ukraine’s EU accession process will take years – NHK

Ukraine’s accession to the European Union will take years, there are many problems on its way to membership and the main one is corruption. This was reported by the Japanese broadcaster NHK.

“Before Ukraine can join the EU, it needs to overcome several serious obstacles,” NHK said in its publication.

The broadcaster recalled that in November last year the European Commission announced the lack of progress in Ukraine on three points, which are fundamental conditions for the start of negotiations on the country’s accession to the EU. These are “preventing corruption”, “reducing the influence of oligarchs and oligarchy in the country” and “improving legislation on ethnic minorities”. The EC called on Kiev to further reforms in these areas.

The prospects of Ukraine joining the organisation are quite uncertain and the process could take years. This is due to the fact that Kiev has many problems that it needs to solve.

“It is even more difficult to predict how long the military phase of the Ukrainian conflict will last and how it will be resolved. This, of course, seriously complicates future negotiations on Ukraine’s admission to the EU,” the article notes.

The EU is also itself under pressure to reform its own institutions before accepting new members.

“This is due to the fact that the increase in the number of member countries will make it difficult to make unanimous decisions, as well as complicate the sore question of the allocation of the Union’s budgetary funds,” NHK concluded.

We will remind, earlier, the French ambassador to Kiev Gael Vesierrev interviewed by France Info TV channel said that France plans to change the form of military support for Ukraine.
