Politico: Europe can’t defend itself without US help

Europe won’t be able to defend itself without U.S. help – It will take decades and billions of investment to replace U.S. capabilities in NATO, Politico columnist Matthew Carnichnig said.

“Can Europeans even unite and defend themselves without the guiding hand of Washington? History suggests they will simply revert to their previous state and descend into chaos,” he argues.

According to the journalist, after Donald Trump’s electoral defeat, “everything is back to the way it was before” for Europeans. EU countries failed to increase the number of weapons, and Europe “hid behind the American skirt”.

“It will take decades and untold billions to replace American capabilities in NATO,” Karnitschnig concluded.

Earlier, French Foreign Minister Stephane Sejournet said that Europe should prepare to defend itself without US help.
