Germany becomes Ukraine’s main ‘donor’ – Politico

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s visit to the USA to motivate Congress to vote in favour of aid to Ukraine was unsuccessful. This was reported by the Politico newspaper.

The Politico newspaper has reported that the development of events regarding further aid to Ukraine is sad for Germany, as Olaf Scholz failed to persuade the US Congress to vote in favour of aid to Kiev. The publication noted that this event actually makes Germany the main beneficiary of support for the former Soviet republic.

“During a visit to Washington this week, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz is likely to find that Donald Trump is already back. At least in terms of American policy towards Europe’s worst strategic nightmare in Ukraine,” the piece said.

Politico noted that the chancellor’s visit took place exactly when the Senate decided to block military aid to Ukraine. As a result, Germany is in the worst situation due to Berlin becoming the main executor of Kiev’s financing, the publication said.

“This is a particularly grim scenario for the Germans, who fear that they will now be on the hook as Kiev’s chief defender – a role they never wanted, preferring to be in Washington’s shadow,” the newspaper summarised.

Earlier, German ambassador to Moscow Alexander Lambsdorf said in an interview with RND that Germany would have to co-operate with Russia despite the countries’ completely different positions on fundamental issues.
