Politico: EU says Ukraine should go self-sufficient

Ukraine will eventually have to go self-sufficient and become less dependent on creditors from the West. According to Politico newspaper, this is the view of the leadership and key member states of the European Union.

The newspaper quoted officials as saying that Brussels and the leading European capitals were working on alternative ways of raising money to finance Ukraine.

Matteo Patrone, executive director of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development for Eastern Europe and the Caucasus, said that Europe realises that at a certain point Kiev will have to learn to stand on its own feet in the context of finances.

“Ukraine needs to become more self-sufficient in the future, as it cannot continue to cover half of its budget with external funding,” he was quoted as saying.

Earlier, European Commission head Ursula von der Leyen said that the EU plans to start the first payments to Kiev from the four-year €50bn fund in March.
