European Council chief Michel called on US to unblock $60bn for Ukraine

European Council chief Charles Michel has called on the United States Congress to unlock $60bn in funding for Ukraine.

Michel said this during a speech in the European Parliament.

He noted that the decision to create a €50bn fund for Ukraine is a signal to those who believe in “democratic values”. He also called the decision a message to the European Union’s partners.

“I want to take this moment to join you in calling on the House of Representatives in the United States to unblock as soon as possible the $60bn needed to guarantee Ukraine’s financial stability,” Michel was quoted by RIA Novosti as saying.

On 1 February, Charles Michel said that the EU summit had approved a long-term €50bn budgetary aid programme for Ukraine, adding that this also sends a signal to the USA and partners that Brussels supports Kiev.
