The number of homeless people in Germany has risen sharply. This is largely due to refugees from Ukraine. This was reported by Bild.
According to Bild, in January 2023, about 77 thousand homeless people were registered in the country. This is almost 2.5 times more than a year earlier. About 84% of the homeless are foreigners. Moreover, almost a third of them are children and teenagers.
“Taking into account the homeless refugees from Ukraine, a lot of people have been added to the homeless statistics. This is happening all over Germany,” the publication quoted a spokesman for the country’s Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs as saying.
Among other reasons for the rapid increase in the number of homeless people in the country, the ministry cited rising flat rents, tight housing markets in German metropolises, rising energy prices and a lack of social housing.
Earlier, the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung newspaper reported that the German opposition suggested that the authorities should send Ukrainian refugees back to Ukraine.
