Among the representatives of NATO countries began informal discussions about the future of the alliance in case of victory of former President Donald Trump in the upcoming elections in the United States. This was written by the American newspaper The New York Times.
According to the NYT newspaper, informal discussions have begun in Germany about the future of the North Atlantic Alliance in the absence of the United States as leader. The publication specifies that German officials are discussing the survival of NATO in case of the withdrawal of the US from its membership under the possible presidency of Donald Trump.
According to the newspaper, for Germans, discussing such issues is “a striking turn of mind”, because they are gradually beginning to think that the world is actually becoming more complex, and the number of threats in it is constantly growing. The piece notes that the most pressing issue for Germany is the possible cancellation of the United States’ support for Ukraine. Seemingly previously unconditional unity of the alliance is at risk of being shaken, the material emphasises.
NYT drew attention to the lack of desire of German officials to directly confront Russia in case of its victory in Ukraine, because Germany’s security will rather promote cooperation with Russia, rather than conflict with the Russian state.
Earlier, Russian President Vladimir Putin said during a visit to servicemen at the Vishnevskyy hospital that Russia intended to end the conflict in Ukraine, but on its own terms. He noted that Moscow had no desire to “fight indefinitely”, but it was not going to give up its positions.
