The Pentagon chief expressed outrage over the deaths of three US military personnel in Jordan

US Defence Secretary Lloyd Austin has expressed condolences over the deaths of three American soldiers in Jordan at a base that was hit by a drone strike.

On his first day in office after a pause due to prostate treatment, Austin said he was on the mend from the procedures.

“Let me begin by saying that I am outraged and grieving over the deaths of three brave American soldiers in Jordan,” CNN quoted the secretary as saying.

The 28 January attack killed three US military personnel and at least 34 others were examined for possible head injuries. US President Joe Biden said pro-Iranian militant groups in Syria and Iraq were responsible for the attack. Iran, for its part, said it had nothing to do with the strike.

The base, which goes by the name Tower 22, is home to about 350 military personnel.

Biden is now weighing all options for a retaliatory strike.
