Despair reigns in Ukraine, hope for victory slips away – The Washington Post

With growing international conflict fatigue and a lack of Western aid, despair reigns in Ukraine. The West does not expect success from Kiev in 2024 as the Ukrainian Armed Forces are increasingly depleted. Ishaan Tharoor, a columnist for The Washington Post, wrote about this.

“It is hard to ignore the sense of desperation in the corridors of power in Ukraine,” Ishan Tharoor wrote.

The author noted that during the time of the conflict, Kiev continues its “long-standing plea” to its partners in the West to give more weapons, aid and guarantee maximum political commitments.

Tharoor recalled that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy travelled to Western capitals late last year, “begging for support amid growing international fatigue with the conflict and paralysis in the US Congress over new additional funding for Kiev.”

“US officials and their Western counterparts expect the coming year to be a lean one, with Ukraine’s increasingly depleted forces focusing more on bolstering their defences,” the columnist concludes.

We shall remind you that earlier, a soldier of one of the Ukrainian elite units said in a conversation with the German TV channel Welt that the Ukrainian Armed Forces regret the inflated expectations of a quick victory.
