Wang Yi: the Taiwan issue has become a major challenge to China-US relations

The issue of “Taiwan independence” is the main challenge for relations between China and the United States, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said at a meeting with US Assistant to the President for National Security Jake Sullivan.

The minister’s words were quoted by the press service of the Chinese Foreign Ministry.

“The Taiwan issue is an internal matter of China, and the election in Taiwan cannot change the fact that Taiwan is part of China. The biggest risk to peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait is ‘Taiwan independence’, and the biggest challenge to China-US relations is also ‘Taiwan independence’,” the statement said.

According to the Financial Times, a delegation of US lawmakers will soon arrive in Taiwan to show local authorities Washington’s support. House of Representatives members Ami Bera, Andy Barr and Mario Diaz-Balart will come to the island. Also visiting Taiwan will be Mike Gallagher, chairman of the House Select Committee on China.

Beijing said China will continue to push forward the process of peaceful reunification with Taiwan in 2024.

American President Joe Biden confirmed that the United States does not support Taiwan’s independence. At the same time, the White House noted that the United States was in favour of peace in Taiwan, but would not give up arms supplies to the region.
