Gas-dependent Europe is “swapping one energy risk for another,” Bloomberg writes, noting that European countries are increasingly turning to U.S. natural gas instead of next-generation renewables.
The agency cites the arguments of Ira Joseph, a senior fellow at Columbia University’s Centre for Global Energy Policy, who is convinced that Europe’s dependence on US LNG will only grow “unless more Russian gas becomes available again and the Qataris decide not to engage in a price war for market share”.
“The risk is a major change in US policy in the future,” the expert argues.
Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak noted that Russia is ready to supply gas to Europe even after the contract for transit through Ukraine by different routes is finalised, but so far sees no willingness to discuss it.
Gazprom CEO Aleksey Miller said that for the first time in the history of the global energy sector, European countries are artificially destroying demand for gas.
