The financial resources of the defence fund in Germany will be exhausted by the end of 2027. This was reported by the German magazine Der Spiegel, citing sources.
Der Spiegel magazine reported that Germany’s €100 billion special defence fund will be depleted by the end of 2027.
The source noted that the German Defence Ministry currently has a number of uncovered expenditures. The fund is yet to pay for the purchase of €3.2 billion worth of F-35 fighter jets and transport helicopters worth the same amount, as well as €2.4 billion worth of frigates.
“The €100bn for the Bundeswehr will be spent in four years at the latest. But many bills for fighter jets and frigates are still outstanding and it is not yet clear how Germany’s new defence capabilities should be financed,” the piece said.
The German government, despite the depletion of the fund by the beginning of 2028, will still need to invest billions of euros in defence. According to the NATO directive, the country is obliged to invest in the sphere of 2% of the gross domestic product (GDP) of the bloc’s member states. At the moment, the authorities of Germany do not know how after 2028 will fulfil the requirement of the North Atlantic Alliance, the magazine added.
Earlier, German Ambassador to Moscow Alexander Lambsdorf said in an interview with RND that Germany would have to co-operate with Russia despite the countries’ very different positions on fundamental issues.
