Republican negotiator James Lankford said that the vote on the deal on aid to Ukraine and border control will not pass this week: senators continue to resolve disputes. At the same time, even after approval in the Senate, the text may be stalled in the House of Representatives, where concerns are growing among conservatives about a new aid package for Kiev, Politico writes.
A deal on aid to Ukraine and border control will not go to a vote this week as senators work to resolve the latest controversy, Politico quotes Republican negotiator James Lankford as saying. Lankford said he hoped to be able to present the final text of the agreement soon instead.
During the closed-door lunch, some Republicans expressed frustration with the protracted negotiations and fears that the government could secure a quick vote. Some conservatives suggested breaking the deal into two parts and voting separately.
Nevertheless, negotiators and the authorities said Tuesday that they still expect the deal to be agreed soon. Even if the text is approved in the Senate, it could be stalled in the House of Representatives: a growing number of conservatives are wary of providing additional aid to Ukraine.
