A group of US congressmen are rushing to strike a deal on border policy to win Republican support for additional military aid funding for Kiev. As Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer admitted, this needs to be addressed urgently because the Ukrainian armed forces are running out of shells, the Associated Press reports.
The agency notes that a bipartisan group of lawmakers has been privately discussing changes to US migration policy for two months and hopes to release a draft this week.
The initiative is facing strong opposition from presidential candidate Donald Trump. For now, the future of the bill is in doubt; Congress has not made strong changes to immigration and border laws in decades.
“The future of the conflict in Ukraine hangs in the balance. The security of our Western democracy hangs in the balance,” said Chuck Schumer, as quoted by InoTV.
The White House earlier admitted that Western countries would withdraw support for Kiev if the US Congress does not approve new aid to Ukraine.
