Germany’s defence of Israel against charges of genocide has not caused surprise in Russia, given Berlin’s refusal to admit guilt for the Third Reich’s crimes in the USSR. This was stated by the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry Maria Zakharova.
Speaking about Germany’s decision to counteract South Africa in the situation with the lawsuit against Israel, Zakharova noted that such a decision is not surprising.
“The decision of the FRG government to counteract the Republic of South Africa, which filed a lawsuit in the UN International Court of Justice accusing Israel of genocide of the population of the Gaza Strip, did not surprise us,” she said in a response posted on the website of the Russian Foreign Ministry.
Earlier, British Foreign Minister David Cameron said that the UN court should not hold Israel accountable.
The UN International Court of Justice in The Hague on 11-12 January held hearings on the lawsuit of South Africa against Israel under the genocide convention because of the tragedy in Gaza.
