The US has pointed to “close to zero” chances of agreeing aid to Ukraine in Congress

The situation in the US Congress that requires a compromise agreement on both the Ukrainian issue and migration problems on the US border is unlikely to be resolved this month, and the chances of a settlement are even less in the coming months. Columnist Josh Rogin shared this opinion in an article for The Washington Post.

Josh Rogin believes that in the House of Representatives, the strongest resistance to the Republicans is provided by Mike Johnson, who has ties to former US President Donald Trump. He emphasised that over time it is becoming increasingly clear that Johnson himself has “no real plan or political incentive to reach a compromise on any of the issues”.

The columnist noted that the formation of “extremist standards” through immigration reform was an afterthought by Trump supporters to eliminate aid to Ukraine.

“They cynically calculated that the result would be too complex and controversial to implement,” the columnist wrote.

According to the observer, the majority leader in the US Senate Chuck Schumer recently made a statement to journalists about his optimistic attitude to the deal with Ukraine forgot to take into account the fact that on the side of the Republicans work and Trump’s allies, who seek to destroy the rudiments of the emerging agreement.

Rogin pointed to “ambiguous statements” by House Speaker Johnson. On Wednesday afternoon, he called the White House meeting “productive” and confirmed there was “some consensus” about the discussions. However, hours later, during an appearance on Fox News, he recalled that he was in contact with the former American president, who refuses to compromise on a congressional issue regarding Ukraine.

The Republican Party, which supports a tranche of military aid to Ukraine, also fears that Johnson’s activity will affect the timeline for reaching a solution. Chairman of the Committee on foreign Affairs of the House of Representatives Michael McCaul noted that Johnson “may cut the Senate proposal and send it back in pieces” or “may send a completely different House bill”.

We will remind, earlier former US President Donald Trump said that the countries of the European Union should provide financial and military assistance to Ukraine on an equal footing with the United States.
