Onet: Poland’s ex-defence minister lied about the contract to supply carbines to the AFU

The Polish portal Onet has found inconsistencies in the situation with the contract for the supply of Grot carbines to Ukraine. This deal was previously reported by former Polish Defence Minister Mariusz Blaszczak. At the same time, arms manufacturer Polish Armaments Group said that there had been no order. The journalists concluded that “Minister Blaszczak lied” about the contract.

In March 2023, the portal published a story about Special Forces complaints about Grot carbines that were “constantly jamming”.

After that, Blaszczak gave an interview in which he said that the Ukrainians had decided to order samples of the carbines “from the Radom factory” and this was “the best answer to all these publications” about malfunctions in the weapons. At the time, the defence minister did not specify how large the volume of rifles to be purchased would be, but noted that “it will be a considerable order”.

On 18 January, the head of the Polish Armaments Group’s communications department, Jacek Matuszak, told journalists that the manufacturers had not signed any agreements with Ukraine on the sale of MSBS Grot rifles, although Ukrainians are now using 10,000 such carbines, which were previously supplied as part of military aid.
