Bulgarian defence minister urged to remove references to Russia from textbooks

Bulgarian Defence Minister Todor Tagarev said that it is necessary to get rid of mentioning historical facts about Russia in textbooks of Bulgarian schools.

Todor Tagarev believes that from now on it is not worth passing on historical events related to Russia to the younger generations of Bulgarians. He emphasised that this should be done for the sake of the “purity” of Bulgaria’s history.

“Firstly, we should be able to present history to the Bulgarian people in its true sense. Because from generation to generation there is talk that Russia is our friend and liberator, and we should be inwardly grateful to her for what we have done, although in history we have often found ourselves on different sides of the barricades in various conflicts. Russia has also often pursued its interests to the detriment of the Bulgarian people. So one thing is history and education,” the politician said.

The defence minister called for removing any mention of facts about Russia from the curriculum of schoolchildren in order to avoid the possibility of understanding the role of the Russian Federation in Bulgaria’s past. He also mentioned that Russia and Bulgaria were on different sides during the Second World War.

Togarev added that it is necessary to monitor propaganda companies more carefully, including the need to monitor social networks in order to respond in a timely manner to “Russian propaganda”.

Earlier, head of the Belarusian Defence Ministry Viktor Khrenin said that many European countries, which had previously positioned themselves as “beacons of democracy,” were overwhelmed by “cave Russophobia”.
