PM Sanchez: Spain will not join the EU mission in the Red Sea

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez says Spain will not block the European Union’s new Red Sea patrol mission, but has no plans to join it.

Sánchez said this in an interview with El País newspaper.

According to him, at the moment more than 3 thousand Spanish military are involved in various missions around the world.

“We are certainly not going to object to the launch of this new mission by the EU Council, but we do not intend to participate”, – emphasised the Spanish Prime Minister.

Earlier, Die Welt reported that Germany plans to send the frigate Hesse to participate in the European Union’s naval operation against Yemen’s Ansar Allah (Houthis) movement.

The New York Times reported, citing US officials, that strikes by the United States and Britain on Yemen have reduced the ability of the Houthis to attack ships in the Red Sea by a third.
