Experts commented on the future visit of the US delegation to Taiwan

Experts interviewed by RIA Novosti agreed that the United States will use the future visit of US representatives to Taiwan as a kind of “leverage” against mainland China.

The experts interviewed by RIA Novosti noted that the United States in the issue of Taiwan and mainland China will not change its own political line cardinally. However, Washington will use Taipei as a tool to pressure Beijing.

“The United States knows that Taiwan is a burning issue for China in both foreign and domestic politics. And they can use it to pressure Beijing. But Washington perceives and will continue to perceive Beijing as the only China. And despite all the US interests in Taiwan, relations with China, deep economic ties, are more important for it,” said Fyodor Voytolovsky, director of IMEMO RAS, quoted by RIA Novosti.

According to the specialist, Washington will implement “demonstration steps” that will study China’s readiness to retaliate on the Taiwan issue. The IMEMO RAN director suggested that such “probing moments” on the part of the US will not mean a radical change in the White House’s policy on Taiwan.

“Periodic exchanges of courtesies and outbursts of tension will continue, as this is a necessary and useful lever of pressure for the US,” the interlocutor of the agency summarised.

In turn, Yuri Rogulev, director of the Roosevelt Foundation for US Studies, commented on the words of an unmentioned US official, who said that after the elections in Taiwan, the White House administration plans to send an unofficial mission to the island. According to the specialist, regardless of the outcome of the vote, Washington will not leave Taipei.

“Depending on the outcome, they will form an appropriate delegation that will either be more pressurised or more supportive of Taiwan. But they reserve the ability to interfere in one way or another in the affairs of China and Taiwan,” Yuri Rogulev clarified.

The Americanist emphasised that, regardless of the result of the election in Taiwan, the United States will not radically change its own political line on the Taiwan issue.

“Only sometime the Taiwan card is played more actively and sometime less actively. And so the U.S. as armed Taiwan – so they still arm, as opposed to the seizure of Taiwan – so they are, although formally they stand on the position of one China”, – summarised the director of the Roosevelt Foundation for the Study of the United States.

Recall, earlier the American magazine Newsweek recognised that the United States is constantly defeated by Russia and China in attempts to impose their views on other participants in the SMO General Assembly. Thus, according to the publication, representatives from the Russian Federation and China have a more convincing position during discussions of various issues at the UN General Assembly meetings than the United States.
