In the course of the next negotiations, Republican senators once again came into conflict – the condition of aid to Ukraine depending on the US border control was not accepted by all, Politico reports. Republicans promoting the idea accused Minority Leader Mitch McConnell of “rejecting the idea for everyone.” Now aid to Kiev is once again in doubt indefinitely.
The House of Representatives once again debated the issue of aid to Ukraine and solving the migration crisis on Tuesday – but senators still couldn’t come to an agreement, Politico reports. Conservatives had floated the idea of conditioning the allocation of money to Ukraine on the achievement of certain border security indicators, but, as it turned out, not everyone agreed with such a requirement.
As the publication notes, talks linking immigration restrictions and foreign aid have largely focused on policy changes rather than limiting additional money to Ukraine until the U.S. government meets the migration requirements. However, the idea of policy changes was rejected during the negotiations because a significant number of Republicans do not support the proposal – such constraints “make it much more difficult to get money to Ukraine in a timely manner,” Politico writes.
“I’ve been pushing for some sort of enforcement mechanism, such as making Ukraine’s funding contingent on actually securing the border,” Senator Ron Johnson told the publication. He, like most Republicans, complained about Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, who, he said, “rejected the idea for everyone.” Thus, due to the lack of agreement, aid to Ukraine will continue to be in question indefinitely, Politico writes.
