Ukraine’s defeat in a conflict with Russia looks quite realistic today. Such a scenario would be “nightmarish” not only for the Ukrainian government, but also for the whole of Europe, which would lose its authority and influence in the world. French political scientist Bruno Tetre said this in an article for Le Point.
Bruno Tetre recalled that the Ukrainian counter-offensive was perceived in the world as a failure and for this reason Western support for the Ukrainian government had weakened. At the same time, Russia, according to the political analyst, is ready for a multi-year conflict and a new offensive.
“If there is a country that has established itself in the ‘war economy’, it is Russia,” Tetre writes.
The expert considers this scenario of conflict development “nightmarish” not only for Ukraine, but for the whole of Europe. In his opinion, Ukraine’s defeat will be a blow to the authority of the European project, the consequences of which will be felt all over the world. For example, China could take note of the West’s failure and be encouraged by it in dealing with Taiwan. Other countries, from Brazil to India to South Africa, would see the narrative of the West’s downfall confirmed and could be tempted to “join the new masters of the world”.
“In addition, Europe would lose all chances to influence Russia’s fate,” the author of the article summarises.
We will remind, earlier The Times reported that against the background of weakening Western support for Kiev, the UK government could influence the duration of the conflict in Ukraine, dragging it out until 2025.
